Woeful Wake, is a photo-essay installation. It is comprised of seven framed photographs arranged within coffee-stained and hand-knotted, string fishing nets. Rolling waves, foaming water and sun-weathered objects discovered along the shore line were selected as photograph subjects. They collectively create a narrative, as if they are remnants from a Balsero journey. The photo-essay begs many questions: “What may have happened along the Cuban Balseros' journey?” Did they survive or perish? If they made it safely to land, what happened to them afterwards? By putting oneself in the imaginary but plausible scenario, compassion and understanding for the Balsero's quandary is evoked.
