“Wall,” 2019
My artwork over the course of my career has addressed social justice issues, advocated for tolerance, and provided platforms for civil,
public dialogue in the hope of propelling momentum toward finding solutions.
I have been disturbed by the increasing divisiveness within our society that has expressed itself in hateful ways, such as, incidents of mass gun violence and hate crimes. This untenable trend is not in keeping with the ideals and values we profess.
Immigration is one of the more currently and hotly debated issues of our day that has contributed to this divide. “Wall,” is my response to narratives that have surfaced during discussions about U.S. immigration policy. Although at first glance appearing to present a binary and straightforward perspective, it actually evokes some of the complexities surrounding the immigration issue that sorely need addressing. It is made in the hope that it may promote awareness and encourage thoughtful conversation.
