ARTIST STATEMENT 2016
I am an American Artist of Cuban, Spanish and Puerto Rican descent. My art is conceptual, conscience-driven, process-oriented and hybrid. It variably combines photography, printmaking, sewing, food preparation, painting, collage, drawing, assemblage, performance, audio, and video. Materials and meanings are layered to pose questions about human socio-political, spiritual and economic concerns.
For example, “The Price of Oil, $94.375. How Many More,” “Play Ball,” and “As American As Mom and Apple Pie,” are installation tableaux that meld maps and iconic American symbols, to set the stage for conversation about U.S. Foreign Policy and American culture. Depending upon the lens through which they are viewed, they evoke opposing perspectives. I call them “enacting Democracy” pieces.
Early experimental works of mine were approached as if I were in an excavation of memory, culture and identity. I constructed mixed media pieces from collected research source material; images from photo albums, interviews, online searches, book reviews and newspaper articles. From this process came: “Connection Disconnection,” a photo-essay installation about the subject of “urban dislocation." It was installed inside a retail window space as part of the Fotofest Biennial and was made of found objects, 200 lbs. of yellow corn seed, and a video produced from shadow photographs taken of anonymous people. Another installation, “Audible Silence,” addressed the plight of exiles and the subject of individual human rights. It combined handmade books and found objects, with a staged and photographed performance of a raft escape at sea. The escape was enacted with a raft crafted from an oil barrel, sea-worn rope, and recycled wooden pier planks. The raft was launched into the sea, where the power of crashing waves caused it to break apart and wash up onto shore. The action process was photographed, and the resulting images were transferred onto coffee-stained gauze and then incorporated into the installation.
My work has been exhibited in galleries, alternative spaces, cultural venues, corporations, public spaces and museums in East Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States.
